[Online Book of Shadows]The Tools of Wicca, The Altar, Preparation For Magick, Basic Rituals & Spells, Divination

Remember, a Witch's spells are personal use items used to help them in day-to-day life or in spiritual practice. Very few spells actually work by simply reciting a few words and performing specified actions. Those that do work so directly tend to be rather dangerous for an inexperienced Witch to attempt. Above all, spells are rooted in the technique; in other words, you should know how to use magick in a general sense before attempting them. Be careful and judicious in your use of magick, taking care with everything you do.

Red taper candle

Goddess candle

God candle

Cauldron

Goblet, chalice or cup Incense burner (any type)
Upkeep:
1. Fill the chalice with water (preferably rain or snow water) on the night of a New Moon. This represents the waxing cycle of the Goddess during the coming month.
2. Reserve the ashes from the burnt incence for use on Samhain or Yuletide in ritual.

Other items:
Place the Book of Shadows to the left of the altar along with a broom for cleansing.
Place the athame to the right of the altar along with a staff or wand for ritual purposes.
Spell materials can be placed in front, behind or at other locations around the altar as befitting their relevance to the Goddess and the God. (Goddess to the left, God to the right)

An Approach to Dispell a Headache

...submitted by Crazewitch

If you have a headache lay down gently, and close your eyes picturing nothing but darkness and stars brightening up the eternal darkness. See the satellite and see yourself laying there in space, and see red laser rays coming from your head going into the satellite. Keep picturing this, and then see the satellite letting out blue rays of energy, good energy going into your head. Keep it up for at least three minutes, and after those three minutes slowly lift up your head, and very slowly shake it, and you should feel your headache gone from you.

A Spell for Healing

After Grounding, Centering and Casting the Circle...

Envision the person whom you wish to heal and imagine the energy surrounding you moving to encompass them. Focus on your positive emotions for the person and let them guide the flow of the spell; remember the trust that this person has given you in granting permission for this spell to be cast - this trust is also a strong link.

Light the Goddess Candle, reciting Her name and calling to Her power.

Light the God Candle, reciting His name and calling to His power.

From both lit candles, light a single, red taper (red for power, light, warmth and healing) set in a green base (for nature and healing).

Fill the Chalice with natural water (if possible) and wet a strip of cloth in it.

Chew a small bit of fresh Ginger Root (for strength and the power of the spell) and then place it in the center of the cloth. Sprinkle this with Rosemary (for healing).

Call out to the Goddess and God both, invoking Them to heal the person in need with words that flow from your feelings. Simple and direct wording asking for nature's gift to heal the subject of their affliction.

Light the wrapped Ginger Root and Rosemary with flame from the red taper and place it within your Cauldron or on a fire-safe place. Visualize the flames carrying the healing energy up and away to help the person in need.
Thank the Goddess and God.
Close the Circle.
Ground any excess energy.

The Cleansing and Charging of a New Tarot Deck

Often, with ritual, you 'feel' your way through it; following the paths that seem most correct. For me, magick is rarely done the same way twice; improvosation seems necessary. This in mind, feel free to modify this incantation to fit your own beliefs and path.

For visualization, gather a black votive candle and a white votive candle, and cast the spell sometime in the days following the full moon. Gather a green taper candle as well.

A bit of gingerroot (for potency/power) can be chewed during this ritual and peppermint leaves may also be helpful. If you have any incence (stick incense is easiest and cheapest to come by), use a stick during the ritual. While your favorite incence (or one with which you identify with cleansing) is always a good idea; incenses with such properties to me seem to be pine or frankinsence. Get a piece of silk to set your deck upon and wrap it with when you are done.

A pocketwatch, hourglass, sundial or other time piece should finish this ritual.

1. Gather your herbs and implements. Get a stone or something that won't burn on which you can set the leaves (if you decide to use them).

2. Set the three candles from left to right with the black votive on your left, green taper in the middle and the white votive to your right. Put the timepiece in front of the green candle. This symbolizes divination and knowledge of the future.

3. Set the Tarot deck on the silk cloth before you.

4. Ground and Center.

5. Establish what protections/requests to the Four Quarters you require.

6. Start by lighting the cleansing incense and breathing in deeply, holding the tarot deck to be cleansed in your lap. Feel it's contours with your hands until you know it's shape in your mind. Overlay this image with another image of the timepiece. Let the symbolism of the two merge to become one. (In other words, concentrate on the symbolic similarities of the deck and time piece and weave the raised energy through that concept.)

7. Light the green candle with the words,
", I light this candle in honor of your cleansing hands."

8. Chew the ginger root (if you like, it's pretty awful tasting) for potency and utilize the energy released from it to charge that which you have already raised.

9. Take the peppermint leaves (if used) and light them in the green candle and let them burn on the stone or inflammable surface you have with the words,
", I release the energy of life to drive off impurity."

10. Pass the tarot deck through the smoke of the leaves (if used) and the incense. Focus the image in your head on the energy and smoke moving through the deck and forcing impurity out.

11. Light the black candle from the green taper, imagining it to represent the impurities in the deck. As it burns, so too are the impurities cleansed away.

12. Innundate the shape in your mind (and project through the deck) with the energy you have raised.

13. Flip through the deck, one card at a time, and picture the impurities drifting up on the smoke away from the card. Be sure to channel the actual energy you've raised into this visualization. If it feels appropriate, you may want to use a chant (such as the Goddess Chant) to focus your thoughts. Place each card back, face-down, on the silk. You don't have to look at each card unless that feels right to you; this shouldn't have to be a very difficult or a huge task ... just a smooth cleansing. It occurs to me that you may want to pass each card once over the timepiece -in effect, charging the card with the 'future'. This is not required and has been added as an afterthought.

14. Once all the cards are face-down on the silk in a stack, snuff the black candle and light the white one with the words,
", by your healing and my will, So Mote It Be."

15. Wrap the cards in the silk for protection and Ground any extra energy.

16. Snuff the candles.

17. Close any circle or protections you have raised.

To Bind Your Anger

...submitted by SilverToad.

In your right hand, hold some sandy dirt. Poor all your anger into it and then say:
Anger I bind within my hand,
Now I toss it to the land
With harm to none, and for the good of all, so shall it be!
Now throw the dirt over your shoulder and walk away without looking back.

the Apple Spell (to rid one's self of problems and anger)

Lending Strength (Originally submitted to the Songs & Poetry Section)

...submitted by Cory.

Touch the person you want to lend strength to and say,
By the power of the stars
Channel my strength to _____________
Give _____________ the strength they need
If I am weak the let _____________ be strong
Give ____________ my energy.
NOTE: Be careful that you don't stop chanting until you are at a safe place where you can colapse; this drains the power out of you!

A Spell to Cure A Cold

...submitted by Rhiannon Diana.

You'll need:
1 blue candle
1 oz. powdered ginger
5 drops eucalyptus oil

Run a hot bath. Add the ginger and the eucalyptus oil. Light the blue candle and turn out the lights. Enter the bathtub, and soak in the bathwater. Feel the waters cleansing you of the toxins in your body, and say:
Isis, Goddess who heals all Release this (cold, flu, etc.) from me Make me well again.
Chant this as you feel the toxins leaving your body. When you feel slightly shakey (this will happen!), drain the tub and visualize the toxins washing down the drain. Rinse your body and your tub with cool water, visualizing all of the toxins washing off of your body, and your body becoming free of what you were sick with. Bring the candle to your room and immediately go to bed, keeping the candle light for a few minutes as you visualize yourself waking up feeling much better.

*Note: If you need to, put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a cotton pad and put it by your pillow. This helps a lot!
